The first Saturday in October always means a special activity. Scrapbook Generation will be joining other scrapbook stores across the county in celebrating World Cardmaking Day, the kick-off to the cardmaking season that is Christmas.
As we approach the busiest time in the year for most dedicated cardmakers, we hope you can find a few minutes to drop by SG this Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11am-4pm to make three FREE cards (and maybe munch on a piece or two of chocolate)!
Lindsey Amschler will be showing you how to use blending pens to color a stamped image on one of her cards. If you've always wanted to try this technique, now's the time. And we have a full selection of three-pack already-matched-for-you blending pens by American Crafts that won't break the bank like some brands!
On Lindsey's second card, you'll try out the new Tim Holtz Distress Glitter! It's like no glitter you've used before, and the number of colors available is phenomenal.
For the third card, I'll be showing you a cute way to make a beautiful Christmas tree out of strips and scraps. It's a technique I've used before and really love, because the end result is so much more than the small pieces you start with, and requires no extra tools or products! (And for our online friends, I'll post a tutorial here so that you can join us and make this card from materials you have on hand at home.)
You're all invited! To help us know how many to prepare for, please call us at 417-886-0440 or email karin@scrapbookgeneration.com, then just show up on Saturday any time from 11am until 4 pm.

Announcing 'Scrapbook Generation's Create!'
January hasn't typically been my favorite month of the year, but I can't wait for January 2014, when we launch the first issue of our new magazine, "Scrapbook Generation's CREATE." Best of all, the magazine will be a free download! It doesn't get much better than that.
I've been working on the design of the magazine, and it's so much fun that I'm having a hard time getting anything else done. I'd forgotten how much I loved designing publications -- which is what I did in my previous life before SG was around. I feel like I've come full circle, back to the role I'm most comfortable with.
Here are some of the things to look forward to each month:
• We'll feature a different manufacturer's design team every month. The response has been extremely positive, and we're working right now on completing the 2014 monthly schedule before we announce the line-up. Best way to sum it up? You'll be thrilled with the companies that will be using SG sketches and showing off their best ideas, month after month after month!
• Allison Davis and her sketch expertise will be on full display. You'll get a close-up, detailed look at her creative process, and her incredible ability to make simple, yet totally theme-specific handmade embellishments. As time permits, she'll be writing additional articles, just like she did for "Creating Keepsakes" magazine.
• Each magazine will include a one-page sketch, double-page sketch, card sketch, and tag sketch. Allison Davis and Debbie Sanders will alternate doing the one- and two-page sketches, so you'll get to see both designer's style every month. If there is enough interest, we may also include a pocket-page journaling/decorative card sketch and/or a complete pocket-page sketch.
• Starting with the February issue, you'll have the chance to have your work (based on the January sketches) published in our readers' gallery. We know you love SG sketches, and now you'll have the chance to show what you can do!
• Lindsey Amschler will become a familiar name...we'll be showcasing her beautiful mini-albums each month, as well as card and home decor ideas. Lindsey's style leans toward vintage, which makes her the perfect compliment to our style. She also does beautiful stamping work, which isn't surprising since she has her own line of acrylic stamps!
• Katrina Hunt will be featured each month, in a variety of ways. Katrina has a knack for starting off with a sketch and going in a completely different direction, with a beautiful end-result. We'll take a peek into her creative process. She also has an enthusiam for scrapbooking that we're going to channel into as many uses as possible!
• Because we never want to forget where we started, we'll have a special feature each month profiling some of the amazing talent among our local papercrafters. Watch for the best work from some of our gifted scrapbookers and cardmakers and home decor designers here in Springfield, MO. The best part about this segment? We'll never run out of material!
• The magazine will also include other inspirational articles and features related to scrapbooking, cardmaking, and papercrafting.
• And for our last reveal right now, we want YOU to be involved in "Scrapbook Generation's CREATE." Each month, we'll have a question for you to answer. We'll select as many responses as possible to feature.
And let's get started right now! The question for January is...
• What type of scrapbooker are you...solitary (home) or social (crops and retreats)? Be sure to include why you choose one method over the other! For your answer to be published, also include your first and last name, and your city and state (or province). We reserve the right to edit your answer for length.
• Send your email answers to karin@scrapbookgeneration.com, with "January CREATE question" in the subject line.
• Your deadline is September 30.
I can't write all this without mentioning Karin Rush and Stacey Atchley. Karin will be helping with the magazine in several ways, especially in the copy editing and advertising departments. Stacey's in charge of all the technical aspects of transforming the pages we make into an online magazine. Like everything we do, it's family all the way!

Sharing some SG sketch praise!
From time to time, we receive wonderful letters from people who have just discovered SG sketches, or who are long-time users. More often than not, we get one of these letters right in the middle of some of our crazy times, and the letter never fails to cheer us up! I wanted to share this recent letter with you...
"I wanted to thank you for the wonderful sketch books and I can't wait to purchase the new 'One on One' edition. I have been scrapbooking for a long time but I am slow, enjoying the process as much as the finished layout. This becomes a problem when non-scrapbooking people ask me to make a scrapbook of their new baby, grandchild, event, graduation albums, etc. I also somehow got nominated to be the official scrapbooker for our local breast cancer survivor dragon boat team. I suppose I should say no to the requests and work on my own photo albums but I don't. I love the challenge of capturing the feel and the story of people and events that weren't part of my life. But I work full time and have other volunteer involvements that take time as well.
Then I discovered your wonderful sketch books. I can't believe how quickly I can go from a handful of photos to a finished layout. No more hours (literally!) of moving photos around the background page, cutting up cardstock only to decide that I don't like it and starting over. With your books I can create a layout in about 30 minutes and each layout is different, not cookie cutter style. I don't waste time, product, paper and money doing and redoing pages because I don't like the result.
Now when someone asks if I can make an album for them, I feel confident that I can without the project taking over my life. I love how individual each layout can be with different papers and embellishments. Thank you so much for these wonderful books."
Thanks, Sue, from the SG team!

Let the hopping begin!
The bloggers will be letting you know where the sketch they used is available: one of SG's books, one of the downloads, or from sister site Sketch Support. All of the SG sketch products can be purchased in our online store -- click here to shop. And don't forget that we also provide a free sketch to download each month!
We'll start things off here at SG with a layout from me, Debbie Sanders.
This is what I love about our sketches...freedom. Freedom to make them what you want them to be. Freedom to concentrate on your story instead of measurements and positions. Freedom to pick out the papers you love and the photos you love and know -- without a doubt -- that when you've cut and adhered and trimmed and inked, the final product will be something you'll be proud of. Always.
The layout I'm sharing today was made from a sketch that is part of the "6x6 Paper Pad" online class by Allison Davis. On an independent scrapbooking forum, over 60 ladies have been
taking Allison's class...together! They've allowed me to join in the
class, and so far, I've completed four of the sketch layout assignments.
I made a few changes, the main one being the number of photos. For this topic, I had less than the sketch showed, but it was easy to alter to fit what I had available. I also moved the journaling area from the top of the page to the bottom, and used it to combine journaling and embellishing. I added embellishments and expanded the title area, and created a visual triangle by adding a smaller embellishment area at top right. For me, this is a never-fail format -- a visual triangle is the perfect way to unify a double-page layout.
My tip for working with patterned paper: When I'm choosing papers, I make sure that the ones that will have titles or embellishments layered over them are small patterns or tone-on-tone patterns that won't compete with the items I'll be placing on them. In the layout above, I used the boldest pattern in an area that I knew would be left "empty."
Thanks to Allison for creating such a useful, inspiring class that shows a ton of ways to get more mileage out of those cute, almost irresistible 6x6 paper pads. For more information about the "6x6 Paper Pad" class by Allison Davis, click here.
I'm glad to have the chance to share my layout with you. We're so grateful to Ruth for this great idea of
blogging and hopping once every quarter, and to all the bloggers who are participating! If you want to join the list of
bloggers for next time, let Ruth know. She can be contacted at this
address: ruth.bonser@gmail.com.
As for the September blog hop, leave a comment on this blog and on each involved, and one lucky winner will get to choose a sketch bundle from SG's online store. The winner will be drawn on September 9, so you have a week to leave a comment.
