I just have time for a quick note today. My mother and I are leaving on an Alaskan cruise tomorrow, and so this week has been a blur. She is a reluctant participant, so I hope everything goes well. We're going with a group of about 50 sponsored by my cousin Leslie's cross stitch and framing store in Bolivar. My mom's twin sister is Leslie's mother, so I thought it would be a good trip for the "twins" to make together.
I didn't get the Style to Go kits for this week done, and I apologize. When I get back, I'm going to crank out several, and get caught up.
I'll also announce the Design Team when I get back, and I'm going to introduce you to each one of them "in-depth!" They are so talented, and just an all-round nice, friendly, enthusiastic, scrapbook-lovin' group. I know that working with them will be fun.
Be sure and stop in Scrapbook Generation and let my sister Karin vent about not getting to go on the cruise. I suggested that she go with us, but our mom said "Karin needs to stay and run the store." So while I'm off having a great time, she'll be working! Aren't sisters wonderful?

Warm and sunny weather made for a near perfect Relay For Life last night. Scrapbook Generation sponsored a team that raised over $1,000, and had lots of fun in the process.
Thanks so much to Marti Blattert, Traci Snavely, Karen Fielding, and cancer survivor Jennifer Mattix, who joined Karin, Stacey, Allison, and I in the fund raising effort. And thanks to all our customers who helped out by bidding on items in our silent auction, attending the benefit crop, making donations, and dropping money in the collection jar!
We had such a great time last night, watching Jennifer in the survivor lap, walking the track ourselves, eating (of course!), participating the candlelight ceremony of hope, and seeing other friends who were there on teams. Thousands of people were at the Hillcrest football field, all joined together for the same purpose -- fighting the disease who has robbed us all of good friends and beloved family.
My favorite part of the evening was walking around the track with grandson Andrew in a stroller. He was absolutely enthralled by all the people and noise -- and especially by the purple and white balloons.
My other favorite (I tend to have lots of favorites!) part of the evening was sitting under our canopy/tent/gazebo and talking and laughing with our group. Linda Hoover joined us for a while, and we all had lots of fun getting to know each other a little better.
We're all tired today, but it's a good tired.

The suspense is over...at least for us! We've spent the last two days looking through all the great entries we received for Scrapbook Generation's first Design Team. It was hard work, but we have finally made the decision on the six people who will make up the group.
Since it's about closing time today, we'll make the calls on Thursday. (We tried to get Lisa Bearnson to make the calls, but she was busy! You'll have to settle for one of us.)
Thanks to everyone who brought in entries. There was an abundance of talent represented, and we wish we could have chosen all of you!

Monday will be a big day at Scrapbook Generation, because that is when the Design Team entries as due. I can't wait to see them! I know the hard part will be narrowing down the group to a set of finalists, and then choosing the team. We promise to announce our selections as soon as possible. I know how "un-fun" it is to wait for news like that.
On Tuesday, Allison will be teaching a "CD Case Folding Photo Frame" class at 6 p.m., and the class is also offered Thursday, May 25th at 2 p.m. She has really created a great project, using BasicGrey's bright Color Me Silly paper collection, Prima flowers, and other goodies...all for only $5!
Plans for the retreat are going well, and we're starting to get quite a few people signed up. I find myself constantly thinking of neat things we can do to make the weekend special for everyone.

National Scrapbook Day turned out to be a rousing success at Scrapbook Generation...I think. I can't testify to everything that went on around here that day, because I was gone part of the time, due to that thing my sister Karin calls "overbooking." Translated, that means I rarely and/or never turn down a chance to promote scrapbooking, which further means that sometimes I wear both of us out.
About a year ago, I told a friend that I would present a program on scrapbooking at the state Lions Club convention in the spring of 2006. Who knew that it would fall on National Scrapbook Day, one of the most hectic days here at the store. But it did.
I spoke to about 125 women (and a couple of men) at the spouse luncheon at the Missouri Lions Club Convention, held at University Plaza Hotel. I told them my top ten reasons why scrapbooking is a great hobby, and then they each assembled a tag from a kit we had put together for them. I hope they enjoyed themselves. It was an honor for me to take part in their convention, since my dad was a Lions Club member for almost 50 years.
Back at the store, we had 20 women cropping for 12 hours as part of our National Scrapbook Day hoopla. We used a luau theme, and I believe that everyone had a great time. I know I did. I was worn out, and Karin was too, but I just had a wonderful feeling when the day was finally over.
Last year at this time, we were still a new-new-new store, and we were still feeling our way in the new roles we had created for ourselves at Scrapbook Generation. This year, most of the croppers here all day were "regulars" we have come to know and care about. Over the past year and a half, they have learned about our lives, and we have learned about theirs. As we laughed and talked together, I felt like I was entertaining friends in my home, not customers in my store.
So even though there was overbooking going on, what a great day it was here!

One of the fun aspects of owning a business like Scrapbook Generation is that you never know who is going to walk in the front door. The first day we were open, one of my former students (actually, she was one of my newspaper editors) walked through the door, and literally did a double take when she saw me.
Saturday, there were quite a few people in the store, and while Stacey was running the register, I was helping, off and on, a young couple. Later when the wife was checking out, the husband was standing in the front of the store, looking at one of the scrapbook pages I had made. The page has a large photo of a church singing group, Sweet Spirit, that Stacey was in during junior high. The eight girls all had on matching outfits, and yes, it was during the era of big hair. When the husband said "Why, that's Jeanne, that's my sister," both Stacey and I looked up, and then we all started to laugh, because we knew each other...about 18 years ago! It was Adam Bryan, who lived in Mansfield with his family during his early childhood. He hadn't recognized us, and we hadn't recognized him. We had a good visit after that, and had a good laugh over what a funny situation led us to discovering our "identities."

Scrapbook Generation's weekend retreat now has a name...It's All About Memories! I'm happy to discover that people actually read this blog! I found that out the next day after I posted the last message, when scrapbookers started calling to sign up for the September retreat.
Here are a few more pieces of information about the retreat.
There will be a die-cut center available with two Sizzix machines and several alphabet sets, and Scrapbook Generation will have an on-site store where you can purchase cardstock, papers, adhesives, ribbons, tools, albums, idea books, and embellishments.
Resort amenities available to retreat guests include indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs.
A letter with class choices and contest categories will be mailed July 15. Remaining balance and class choices will be due August 1. (We will also be glad to set up a payment schedule for those who would prefer to break the remaining balance up into smaller amounts!)
Tentative Schedule:
Friday -- Check-in at 4 p.m.; dinner at 7; optional class at 9; and snack buffet at 11.
Saturday -- Breakfast in your condo at your leisure; optional class at 10 a.m.; lunch at noon; optional classes at 2 and 4 p.m.; dinner at 6; contest entries due at 9; winners announced at 10; chocolate buffet at midnight.
Sunday -- Breakfast in your condo at your leisure; closing remarks at 10:30 a.m. (not sure exactly when we have to be out of the meeting room yet.)

Faithful readers will be the first to know about Scrapbook Generation's newest venture. Karin and I are excited to announce that the plans are final for our first weekend retreat.
Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1, we will be hosting a "marathon" scrapbooking weekend in Branson. The location will be the Legacy area of Thousand Hills Golf Resort, located just a couple of blocks from the Grand Palace, right off the 76 strip.
Scrapbooking will be held in the Legacy meeting room, which has great lighting, great views, plenty of room, and even a comfy couch to curl up on during break time. When you aren't scrapbooking, you'll be staying in a gorgeous three-bedroom condo which will house up to 6 people. Each condo has a dining area, a complete kitchen, living room, and three private bedrooms, each with its own TV and bathroom. Did I forget the balconies and patios? Actually the rooms are so nice that you may not want to leave to scrapbook!
All-inclusive prices for the weekend are $275 per person for one in a condo bedroom, and $245 per person for two in a condo bedroom. This price includes all meals and snacks and lodging. A variety of classes will be available for an additional charge. Because we want you to feel totally pampered, each person will leave with prizes of scrapbooking products valued at least $50 or more!
A non-refundable deposit of $50 is due when you sign up. The deposit must be made by June 15, and we expect the event to fill up quickly. You can stop by Scrapbook Generation to pay, or we will accept credit cards by phone. Be prepared to let us know who you will be sharing a bedroom with, or even the entire condo, if you can put a bigger group together!

Sometimes around here we just rush from one activity to another! At least my sister Karin thinks that when I schedule her responsibilities for the week.
Thursday, the Springfield Boys and Girls Club bused a group of youngsters to Scrapbook Generation for a lesson in scrapbooking. Karin worked with them for over an hour, helping them make mini-scrapbooks for their families. They used cardstock, fibers, lots of die cuts and stickers, and seemed to have a great time picking out colors and shapes and arranging them on their pages. When they left, they were proudly clutching their creations and excited about showing their parents what they had made.
Friday night, Karin was a "camp counselor" at Camp Scrap at Second Baptist Church in Springfield. The event, held twice a year, was attended by over 150 women. Karin and the other counselors were responsible for making the people at their tables feel welcome, because not all of the croppers were members of the church. I went along with Karin, and we shared our table with a couple of our favorite customers, and three other women we hadn't met before. We all worked on pages, and there were several great make and takes and demos going on during the night. Karin is a member of Second Baptist, but I was pretty much in a state of awe, because my church in Mansfield could probably fit in the lobby of this mega-church!

Glorious isn't a word I use a great deal, but it does a perfect job of describing my family's time together Easter afternoon. After church and lunch, we took a blanket outside and sat under a shade tree. That doesn't sound so special, but I can't remember the last time we did anything similar to that. But like the commercial says, having a baby (in the family) changes everything!
Grandson Andrew, now 10 months old, was the center of our attention. We watched every move, and photographed them as well. Much of the time, he had at least three cameras focused on him, and sometimes four. (One of my favorite pictures of the day shows Stacey, Allison, and I all taking pictures of him at the same time!)
Easter has been my least favorite holiday ever since my dad died unexpectedly, in his sleep, on Easter morning, 1999. With each passing year, we've drooped through the day, without much joy. Easter 2006 was the first time I can remember being happy, and it was all because of Andrew.
I have some great memories of the day...my sister Karin running around the yard, trying to fly a kite in high heels...daughters Stacey and Allison entertaining Andrew with bubbles...Andrew clapping and waving on cue...my mother, who her whole life has cringed if one hair gets out of place, playing with Andrew while her hair blew every direction, leaning over him and laughing and smiling, looking like a young girl again.
We captured all these moments on film, and I know that many scrapbook pages will be made from this glorious day. All five of us scrapbook -- my mother, my sister, my two daughters, and I -- and we each have our own style. We'll make some beautiful pages, but none of them will be the same. That's what is great about this hobby.
When I was back home by myself, I did find myself reflecting on family that wasn't there with us, sitting on a blanket under a shade tree, and reveling in the newest member of the group. My dad isn't around to see his great-grandchild. My grandparents are gone, too. How I would have loved for them all to be there.
When I was a young mom, I don't think I was aware of anything beyond that moment. Now, as a grandmother, I feel like I'm living in three dimensions -- past, present, and future. I'm almost always conscious of how fleeting is our time together, and that the moment we are experiencing will never come again. That's why scrapbooking is so important to me. I feel the need (and the privilege) to unite the generations who will never know each other except through the albums we create.

-- Reminisce: a huge selection of paper, cardstock stickers, and epoxy stickers for the following themes -- general travel, Las Vegas, graduation, wedding, Kid Crossing (trains), circus, 2006, twins, birthday boy, birthday girl, zoo, dogs, farm, park, retirement, doctor visit, tooth fairy, ages 1-9, Genuine Girl, boy, grandparents, sister, son, daughter, dad, mom, brother, and cousins.
